If you live in Los Angeles long enough, you learn one big truth: the weather looks mild, but it’s actually brutal on your stuff.
Cool misty mornings in Santa Monica, brutal mid-day heat in the Valley, and Santa Ana winds that feel like a hair dryer. Now imagine your favorite pieces—that mid-century dresser, your grandma’s piano, your startup’s office files—sitting in a metal box off the 405, baking and cooling, over and over.
That’s why I talk so much about climate-controlled storage with our clients at United Prime Van Lines. This isn’t a fancy upsell; in LA, it’s often the difference between “everything came out fine” and “why is all my stuff warped?”
Let’s strip away the buzzwords. When I say climate-controlled storage, I’m talking about:
What it is NOT: It is not a refrigerator. Your stuff won't be "cold," just stable.
LA has a reputation for perfect weather, but for storage, it’s a nightmare cocktail:
You don't need it for everything. But if you have these items, do not skip it.
1. The "Valley Renovation": You are remodeling in Woodland Hills. You need to clear the living room for 3 months. If you put your furniture in a non-climate outdoor unit in the summer, the heat will bake the finish right off your table.
2. The "Long-Distance Float": You are moving to Austin but don't have a house yet. We pick up your stuff in LA and hold it. We separate the sensitive items (art/electronics) into climate control while the rest waits in standard storage.
3. The "Startup Downsize": Your office in Hollywood is going hybrid. You need to store monitors and ergonomic chairs. High heat will ruin the electronics and plastics. Climate control is the only safe option.
Climate control costs more. But what is the cost of not using it?
The Rule of Thumb: If you would be financially or emotionally upset if an item was damaged by heat or dryness, put it in climate control. If you'd shrug and say, "Eh, it was old anyway," standard storage is fine.
If you work with United Prime Van Lines, we handle the logistics:
In a place like Los Angeles—with its "perfect" but deceptive climate—you aren't overreacting by protecting the things that matter. You’re just being realistic.
If you’d rather not figure all this out alone, that’s exactly what we’re here for. We can move, pack, store, and then put everything back in place when life and timing finally line up.
